Ramanujan: The Man Who Saw InfinityRamanujan: o homem que enxergava o infinito
In January 1913, British mathematician Godfrey Harold Hardy received a letter from India. The sender was an unknown young man named Srinivasa Ramanujan, who worked as a clerk at the Port of Madras, now Chennai. The letter contained page after page of mathematical formulas, many of them without proofs. At first, Hardy suspected that it might be a joke or a fraud. However, after examining those expressions more carefully, he realized that he was facing something extraordinary. Some formulas were already known, others were incomplete, but several were so original that they could only have been created by someone with exceptional talent.
Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887, in the city of Erode, in southern India. He grew up in Kumbakonam, in a family of limited means. His father worked as a clerk in a fabric shop, and his mother looked after the home, sang at a temple, and had a strong influence on her son’s religious upbringing. From a very young age, Ramanujan demonstrated an unusual ability to understand numbers, patterns, and mathematical relationships.
At the age of 16, he found a book that would change his life: *A Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics*, by George Shoobridge Carr. The book brought together thousands of formulas and theorems, presented in summarized form and with few proofs. For an ordinary student, that book would have served as an extensive collection of mathematical results. For Ramanujan, it became a starting point.
He began studying the formulas, reconstructing proofs, and developing new ideas on his own. His interest in mathematics became so intense that he practically abandoned all other subjects. Although he had received a scholarship to study at Government Arts College, he lost the benefit because he failed the subjects that did not involve numbers. Later, he tried to study at another institution, but once again he was unable to complete the course.
Without a degree or a stable job, he continued conducting his research under extremely difficult conditions, facing periods of poverty and even a lack of food. Ramanujan recorded his discoveries in notebooks. Instead of presenting lengthy explanations, he mainly wrote down formulas and results. He often seemed to leap directly to the answer without showing the path he had followed.
This way of working would cause admiration and bewilderment among the mathematicians who later studied his writings. In search of recognition, Ramanujan sent his work to several British mathematicians. His first attempts did not produce the expected result, but the letter sent to Hardy changed his destiny. Hardy was a professor at the University of Cambridge and one of the most respected mathematicians of his time.
After analyzing the material with his colleague John Littlewood, he concluded that the author of those pages possessed extraordinary ability. Hardy also understood that Ramanujan needed to come into contact with the formal methods of European mathematics. The Indian mathematician intuitively arrived at brilliant results, but he did not always present rigorous proofs. In 1914, after overcoming family, religious, and bureaucratic difficulties, Ramanujan traveled to England and began working with Hardy at Cambridge.
The partnership between the two was unlikely. Hardy was an atheist, a rationalist, and deeply committed to the rigor of mathematical proofs. Ramanujan was religious and believed that his mathematical discoveries were connected to divine inspiration. He said that the goddess Namagiri appeared in his dreams and revealed formulas to him.
Despite their cultural and personal differences, the two developed a relationship based on respect and admiration. Ramanujan’s work focused on areas such as number theory, infinite series, continued fractions, modular functions, and integer partitions. A partition represents the different ways of writing a number as a sum of positive integers. The number 4, for example, can be represented in five ways:Apesar das diferenças culturais e pessoais, os dois desenvolveram uma relação baseada em respeito e admiração.
4 4
3 + 1 3 + 1
2 + 2 2 + 2
2 + 1 + 1 2 + 1 + 1
1 + 1 + 1 + 11 + 1 + 1 + 1
Ramanujan and Hardy developed a formula capable of estimating with great precision how many partitions exist for very large numbers. This was only one of the many important results that emerged from their collaboration. One of the best-known stories about Ramanujan involves the number 1729. One day, Hardy went to visit him in the hospital and mentioned that he had arrived in a taxi numbered 1729.Ramanujan e Hardy desenvolveram uma fórmula capaz de estimar com grande precisão quantas partições existem para números muito grandes.
He added that the number seemed rather uninteresting to him. Ramanujan immediately replied that 1729 was, on the contrary, very interesting. It was the smallest number that could be expressed as the sum of two positive cubes in two different ways:Acrescentou que aquele número lhe parecia pouco interessante.
1³ + 12³ = 17291³ + 12³ = 1729
9³ + 10³ = 17299³ + 10³ = 1729
Because of this episode, 1729 became known as the “Hardy-Ramanujan number.” The story reveals the intimacy Ramanujan had with numbers. To him, numbers seemed to have personalities, characteristics of their own, and relationships invisible to most people. Recognition came quickly. O reconhecimento chegou rapidamente.
In 1918, Ramanujan was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, one of the world’s most prestigious scientific institutions. That same year, he also became a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. His nomination to the Royal Society highlighted his research on elliptic functions, number theory, approximations of π, and highly composite numbers. Ramanujan’s health, however, deteriorated during his time in England.
The cold climate, the difficulty of maintaining a diet consistent with his religious beliefs, the isolation, and the hardships caused by the First World War aggravated his condition. For many years, it was believed that he had died of tuberculosis, although later researchers suggested other possibilities, including a liver infection. Ramanujan returned to India in 1919.
In one of his last letters to Hardy, he described what he called “mock theta functions.” At the time, no one fully understood the depth of those ideas. Decades later, they proved important in different areas of mathematics and physics. Srinivasa Ramanujan died on April 26, 1920, at the age of 32.Em uma de suas últimas cartas a Hardy, descreveu as chamadas “funções teta falsas”, atualmente conhecidas como *mock theta functions*.
His scientific life lasted little more than a decade, but he left approximately 3,900 mathematical results. Many were written without complete proofs. Over the following century, researchers devoted years to studying his notebooks, proving his formulas, and understanding the reach of his discoveries. Most of his results proved to be correct, although some were already known and a small number were mistaken.
In 1976, American mathematician George Andrews found, in the archives of Trinity College, a collection of pages containing more than 600 formulas written by Ramanujan during the last year of his life. The material became known as “Ramanujan’s lost notebook.” Its discovery caused enormous excitement and opened new lines of mathematical research. Ramanujan’s story is often presented as the journey of a genius who overcame every difficulty alone.
However, his life also shows how talent can remain invisible when a person lacks access to the right institutions, resources, and opportunities. For years, he produced extraordinary ideas while struggling to find work, food, and recognition. Hardy stated that his collaboration with Ramanujan had been the only truly romantic episode of his life. He also created an informal scale to assess the ability of several mathematicians.
On that scale, he gave himself 25 points, Littlewood 30, the great German mathematician David Hilbert 80, and Ramanujan 100. Perhaps Ramanujan did not see numbers as mere symbols used in calculations. To him, each number seemed to be part of a deep, orderly, and mysterious reality. His unconventional mathematical education created difficulties, but it also allowed him to follow paths that other researchers might never have considered.
More than a century after his death, his formulas continue to be studied and applied in fields ranging from number theory to physics and computing. The journey of the young Indian man who wrote theorems in notebooks, with almost no resources and far from the great scientific centers, became one of the most fascinating stories in mathematics. Ramanujan lived for only 32 years, but he went far enough to show that infinity can also fit within the pages of a notebook.
