| The Day a Dolphin Family Received Human Help | O dia em que uma família de golfinhos recebeu ajuda humana |
| Enzo Maiorca was one of the greatest freedivers of all time. Born in Syracuse, Sicily, he set several world records and devoted much of his life to the sea. Among his many experiences, one of the most moving involved the rescue of a female dolphin trapped in a fishing net. |
| According to Enzo himself, the incident happened many years ago, while he was diving with his daughters, Rossana and Patrizia, who were also experienced divers. |
| That day, a male dolphin approached them and began guiding them through the water. The animal’s behavior caught the group’s attention, and they decided to follow him. Shortly afterward, they found a female dolphin caught in the mesh of a net used for swordfish fishing. |
| The animal was exhausted and unable to reach the surface to breathe. Enzo and his daughters managed to free her and used their arms as a kind of stretcher, helping her to the surface. |
| When she finally reached the surface, the female expelled foam and blood. She was in labor and, shortly after she began breathing again, gave birth to a calf in front of the dolphin that had led the divers to her. |
| Enzo said that the adult dolphin gently guided the newborn, using his beak to lead the calf to its mother’s teats. |
| Remembering that moment, the diver summed up the meaning of the experience in a simple and moving sentence: | Ao recordar aquele momento, o mergulhador resumiu o significado da experiência com uma frase simples e comovente: |
| “I like to think that, on that day, we reunited a family.” |
| The incident further strengthened Enzo Maiorca’s commitment to protecting marine life. After a youth during which he also practiced spearfishing, he permanently put aside his speargun and became a well-known advocate for the oceans. |
| The story shows that animals are capable of seeking help when faced with danger and that, sometimes, encounters between human beings and wildlife can produce extraordinary moments. That day, in the waters near Syracuse, three divers helped a mother, her calf, and her mate remain together. |
