| How to present your ideas effectively | Como Apresentar Suas Ideias Efetivamente |
| If you can conjure up an exciting idea in someone's mind, you have done something wondrous: a little piece of you has become part of them. |
| Connection, narration, explanation, persuasion, these are all great tools for sharing your ideas. But the most direct way of gifting an idea to an audience is simply to show them. Many talks are anchored like this: you reveal your work to the audience in a way that delights and inspires them. The basic name for this is "revelation" the inspiring act of revealing something. |
| In a revelation talk, your goal might just be to create a sense of wonder and delight. If your talk is a demonstration, you're probably hoping to amaze and create a new sense of possibility. If you're sharing a vision of the future, you want it to be so vivid and compelling that your audience makes it their vision. |
| Let's dig into three kinds of revelation talks: | Vamos nos aprofundar em três tipos de palestras de revelação: |
| 1. The Wonder Walk | 1. A Caminhada do Deslumbramento ("The Wonder Walk") |
| A wonder walk is a talk based on revealing a series of images or wonder moments. It can be like a studio tour with an artist guiding you through each artwork, or a hike with an explorer through a dramatic landscape. Each step is simple, with a sense of wonder building as you move from one piece to the next. This type of talk is often used by artists, designers, photographers, and architects. |
| David Gallo gave a brief talk on underwater astonishments. He showed a series of incredible images and videos of bioluminescent sea creatures. A 5-minute talk, it's been viewed over 15 million times on YouTube. |
| A wonder walk works best with a clear throughline, a connecting idea that links all pieces together. Without that, it can get boring. The goal is to give the audience an inside scoop using simple language: share your dreams, your process, and mistakes you made along the way. Illustrator David Macaulay shared his drawings of Rome, showing not just the finished works, but his mistakes, dead ends, and how he got from there to the published illustrations. Letting your listeners in on your process is one of the major gifts of any creative talk. Don't just walk people through your work; take them on a journey that sparks curiosity and inspires new ideas. |
| 2. The Dynamic Demo | 2. A Demonstração Dinâmica (The Dynamic Demo) |
| If what you're revealing is not just visual, like new technology or a novel invention, the audience wants to see it in action. Jeff Han demonstrated multi-touch technology in 2006, two years before the iPhone. Pranav Mistry demoed SixthSense technology, showing the possibilities when combining a phone, a projector, and a gesture-detecting camera. |
| For a dynamic demo, what matters most is having something impressive to demonstrate. If it's truly compelling, you can excite your audience with a small tease about what they're about to see. Michael Pritchard started his talk by asking his audience to imagine life without safe drinking water. He poured muddy pond water, sewage runoff, and rabbit droppings into a container, then ran it through his LIFESAVER bottle and offered it to an audience member. It tasted fine. He demonstrated that the technology worked, then explained its potential to save lives globally. |
| A typical demo journey is: an initial tease, an explanation or context, the demo itself (visual and dramatic), and then the significance, the impact it could have. Exceptional demos can become visions of the future. |
| 3. The Dreamscape | 3. O Cenário dos Sonhos (The Dreamscape) |
| Humans have the unique ability to imagine, invent, innovate, design, and envision worlds that don't yet exist. We can share these visions, inspiring others to believe and act, and sometimes turn them into reality. Screenwriters persuade studios to make movies. Inventors persuade companies to build inventions. Architects persuade clients to finance buildings. Business people energize teams with belief in a new vision. Roteiristas convencem estúdios a produzir filmes. Inventores convencem empresas a construir invenções. Arquitetos convencem clientes a financiar edifícios. |
| Dreams can be communicated with images, demos, sketches, or words. Powerful speeches communicate a dream with inspiring language and passion. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 lasted 17 minutes and 40 seconds, yet it changed history. Marine biologist Sylvia Earle used images and compelling language to describe the ocean crisis. She invited the audience to imagine "hope spots", protected areas for marine life. One audience member wrote a million-dollar check on the spot, and protected ocean space has more than tripled since. O discurso do Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. no Memorial Lincoln em 1963 durou 17 minutos e 40 segundos, e ainda assim mudou a história. |
| Sharing a dream effectively requires painting a bold picture of the future and making your audience desire that future. Visual aids can often help with the first part. Architect Thomas Heatherwick included a slide in his TED Talk showing an elegant high-rise apartment complex with curved buildings and a park at ground level, painting a future many listeners would be thrilled to inhabit. That's the power of our dreams: they can spread to others, they can build excitement and belief, and through that process, they can come true. |
