| The Discovered Lie | A Mentira Descoberta |
| The Doctor Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and founder of the MK Gandhi Institute for Life Without Violence, in his June 9 lecture at the University of Puerto Rico shared the following story as an example of life without violence exemplified by his parents: | O Dr. Arun Gandhi, neto de Mahatma Gandhi e fundador do Instituto M. K. Gandhi para a Vida Sem Violência, em sua palestra de 9 de junho, na Universidade de Porto Rico, compartilhou a seguinte história como exemplo da vida sem violência exemplificada por seus pais: |
| I was 16 years old and I was living with my parents at the institute my grandfather had founded, 18 miles from the city of Durban, South Africa, in the midst of sugar cane plantations. |
| We were well in the countryside, and we had neighbors. | Estávamos bem no interior do país e não tínhamos vizinhos. |
| So, the two sisters and me were always excited to be able to go to the city to visit friends or go to the movies. |
| One day, my father asked me to take him to town to attend an all-day conference, and I immediately hurried at the opportunity. |
| As I was going to town, my mother gave me a list of things from the supermarket, which I needed, and as I was going to spend the whole day in the city, my father asked me to take care of some pending tasks, such as taking the car to the repair shop. |
| When I said goodbye to my father, he said to me: "We will see each other here at 5 PM and we will return home together." | Quando me despedi de meu pai, ele me disse: "Nós nos veremos neste local às 5 horas da tarde e retornaremos à casa juntos." |
| After completing all the tasks, I went to the nearest cinema. |
| I was so focused on the film, a John Wayne double film, that I forgot about the time. |
| It was 5:30 PM when I remembered. | Eram 5:30 horas da tarde, quando me lembrei. |
| I ran to the shop, got in the car, and ran to where my dad was waiting for me. | Corri à oficina, peguei o carro e corri até onde meu pai estava me esperando. |
| It was almost 6 o'clock in the afternoon. | Já eram quase 6 horas da tarde. |
| He asked me anxiously, "Why are you late?" | Ele me perguntou com ansiedade: "Por que chegaste tarde?" |
| I felt bad about the fact and couldn't tell him I was watching a John Wayne movie. |
| So I told him that the car wasn't ready and that I had to wait ... this I said without knowing that my father had already called the repair shop. |
| When he realized that I had lied, he said to me: "Something is wrong in the way I have brought you up, which has not given you the confidence to tell me the truth. I'll reflect on what I did wrong with you. I'm going to walk the 18 miles home and think about it." |
| So, dressed in his fine clothes and shoes, he began to walk to the house, along paths that were neither paved nor lit. |
| I couldn't leave him alone. | Não podia deixá-lo só. |
| So I drove five and a half hours behind him, watching my father suffer the agony of a stupid lie I had told. |
| I decided from that moment that I would never lie again. |
| I often remember this episode and think: "If he had punished me the way we punish our children, would I have learned my lesson?" | Muitas vezes me recordo desse episódio e penso: "Se ele me tivesse castigado do modo que castigamos nossos filhos, teria eu aprendido a lição?. |
| I don't believe it. | Não acredito. |
| If I had suffered the punishment, I would continue doing the same. |
| But this non-violent action was so strong that I have it imprinted in my memory as if it were yesterday. |
| This is the power of life without violence. |
