Today I'm gonna share my story of how I started thinking in English.Hoje vou compartilhar minha história de como comecei a pensar em inglês.
And when we don't think in English, we tend to speak slower, we tend to translate things in our heads, and we just tend to be less proficient in our English.E quando não pensamos em inglês, tendemos a falar mais devagar, tendemos a traduzir as coisas em nossas cabeças e tendemos a ser menos proficientes em nosso inglês.

So, my story is I started thinking in English for a couple nights when I was in the UK.Então, minha história é que comecei a pensar em inglês por algumas noites quando estava no Reino Unido.
I think it was my second or first visit, it was really early on.Acho que foi a minha segunda ou primeira visita, foi muito no começo.

But by the evening, because I was communicating solely in English with other people, it would be really easy for me to talk about what I want for dinner, or just, you know, discuss anything.Mas à noite, como eu me comunicava apenas em inglês com outras pessoas, era muito fácil para mim falar sobre o que queria para o jantar, ou apenas, você sabe, discutir qualquer coisa.
And because I spent the whole day thinking in English I went to bed thinking in English.E como eu tinha passado o dia todo pensando em inglês, eu ia dormir pensando em inglês.
And then I think it was my week three, and normally when you go to learn your language somewhere, during summer, you stay there for like, maybe four or five weeks, or whatever, but by week three I went to bed thinking in English, and I had a dream in English, and I woke up in the morning, and I realized I'm actually thinking in English.E então eu acho que foi na minha terceira semana, e normalmente quando você vai aprender um idioma em algum lugar, durante o verão, você fica lá por talvez quatro ou cinco semanas, ou o que for, mas na terceira semana eu já ia para a cama pensando em inglês , e eu sonhava em inglês, e acordava de manhã, e percebia que estava pensando em inglês.

And my level back then was, I think upper-intermediate, so I was pretty good in English, not spoken English.E meu nível naquela época era, acho que intermediário-alto, então eu era muito boa em inglês, não em inglês falado.
I was good at grammar, I was good at vocabulary.Eu era boa em gramática, era boa em vocabulário.
But this switch was crucial.Mas essa mudança foi crucial.

So, I have created a couple of rules for myself that I followed carefully until I moved to the US.Então, eu criei algumas regras que segui cuidadosamente até me mudar para os Estados Unidos.
And when you're in an English-speaking environment it's super easy.E quando você está em um ambiente onde se fala inglês, é super fácil.
Rule number one, travel to an English-speaking country, stay with locals, as often as you can.Regra número um, viaje para um país onde se fala inglês, fique com os nativos sempre que puder.

This is when I went through this transformation.Foi então que passei por essa transformação.
When I came back to Russia, the second thing I did, I brought a lot of books in English with me, and a lot of magazines.Quando voltei para a Rússia, a segunda coisa que fiz, trouxe muitos livros em inglês comigo e muitas revistas.
You don't have to go somewhere to bring stuff in English, you can just go online, but for me, switching to reading in English only, and I told myself, okay, starting this day, for all the non study-related materials I'm switching to English, Because this is the way to introduce this practice of consuming information in English, into my everyday life.Você não precisa ir a nenhum lugar para trazer coisas em inglês, você pode simplesmente ir online, mas para mim, que estava mudando para leitura apenas em inglês, e eu disse a mim mesma, ok, a partir de hoje, para todos os materiais não relacionados ao estudo, estou mudando para o inglês, porque essa é a maneira de introduzir essa prática de consumir informação em inglês na minha vida cotidiana.
So maybe you follow this rule as well.Então, pode ser que você também siga esta regra.

So whether it's a YouTube video, whether it's Instagram, whether it's a book that you're reading, maybe switch it to English.Então, seja um vídeo do YouTube, do Instagram, um livro que você esteja lendo, tente mudar para o inglês.
And the third thing that is really still working for me here in the US, when you learn a new concept in English, so for example right now I'm learning a lot about childbirth and pregnancy, and I've realized that when I encounter a new topic in English, and I learn all the terms, I cannot think about this topic in my native language, 'cause I don't even know what things mean.E a terceira coisa que realmente ainda funciona para mim aqui nos Estados Unidos, quando você aprende um novo conceito em inglês, então, por exemplo, agora estou aprendendo muito sobre parto e gravidez, e percebi isso quando me deparei com um tópico novo em inglês, e eu aprendo todos os termos, não consigo pensar nesse assunto na minha língua nativa, porque eu nem sei o que significam as coisas.
I cannot translate them.Eu não posso traduzi-las.
Because I learnt the concept in English straightaway I'm not doing this translation in my head.Como aprendi o conceito em inglês diretamente, não consigo fazer essa tradução na minha cabeça.
The fourth tip is that all of us are doing these translations, like when we're at school we learn that this is a pencil, but we don't learn the concept, we learn the translation, and they tell you a "pencil" in your own language, and this is how your brain learns the word.A quarta dica é que todos nós fazemos essas traduções, como quando estamos na escola aprendemos que isso é um lápis, mas não aprendemos o conceito, aprendemos a tradução, e eles dizem a você um "lápis" em seu própria língua, e é assim que seu cérebro aprende a palavra.

So, when you're learning a new concept you get rid of this stuff.Então, quando você está aprendendo um novo conceito, você se livra dessas coisas.
For example, if you want to read more about photography or if you want to read more about filmmaking, blogging, do that in English.Por exemplo, se você quiser ler mais sobre fotografia ou se quiser ler mais sobre cinema, blogs, faça isso em inglês.
And if you encounter a new concept, you just Google it, you go to images, and you read what that word means without translating it.E se você encontrar um novo conceito, você consulta o Google, vai às imagens e lê o que aquela palavra significa sem traduzi-la.

I remember when I moved to Germany for a semester, to study mathematics, I learned so many new words, regarding econometrics and mathematics in German, and then I came back to Russia, I couldn't speak Russian during my classes 'cause everything I knew was in German.Lembro-me de quando me mudei para a Alemanha por um semestre, para estudar matemática, aprendi tantas palavras novas, sobre econometria e matemática em alemão, e depois voltei para a Rússia, não conseguia falar russo durante as minhas aulas porque tudo eu sabia que estava em alemão.
This is like a game-changer as well.Isso também muda o jogo.
So learn new concepts in English, and do not translate stuff from your own language into English.Portanto, aprenda novos conceitos em inglês e não traduza coisas do seu próprio idioma para o inglês.
Try to learn them as a concept.Tente aprendê-las como um conceito.
And of course, other daily activities that you can switch to English, again, our goal, we have 12 hours a day, right?E claro, outras atividades do dia a dia que você pode passar para o inglês, de novo, nossa meta, temos 12 horas por dia, certo?
We do a lot of stuff in our native language, just because we're surrounded by it.Fazemos muitas coisas em nossa língua nativa, só porque estamos cercados por ela.
But our goal is to take all the things during the day that can be done in English, and do them in English.Mas nosso objetivo é pegar todas as coisas durante o dia que podem ser feitas em inglês e fazer em inglês.

Another exercise that I would recommend doing is if you have a favorite song try to write down it's lyrics while listening to it.Outro exercício que eu recomendo fazer é, se você tem uma música favorita, tente escrever a letra dela enquanto a ouve.
There would be some words you won't be able to understand, you will look them up later.Haverá algumas palavras que você não será capaz de entender; você pode pesquisá-las mais tarde.

And this way you develop a regular habit.E assim você desenvolve um hábito regular.
